God loves to use all things – even global pandemics – for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose. So what is God teaching us and how does he want to shape us as we emerge from lockdown? What should we pick up, and what needs to change shape for the new season that we’re in? We don’t know, but we plan to spend time with God to find out!
Our regular prayer meetings will be held on Wednesday and Sunday evenings at 8:30pm on Zoom. The Zoom link is wheatleycommunitychurch.org/month-of-prayer-zoom. We’re aiming for meetings to be an hour, or just under.
We will all gather together on the same zoom call. On Wednesdays, Home Groups may choose to meet before or after for fellowship – check with your Home Group leader as to what your group is doing.
Each time that we gather all together, we’ll follow a similar pattern, but with some room for flexibility. You can find out more detail about each element of our meetings by clicking the tabs above. The pattern follows the first half of the Lord’s Prayer.
We’ll start off with a time of approach – children before a loving Father, and a holy God!
Having started off on that footing, we’ll then take time to pray about God’s Kingdom coming in Wheatley, with a “community focus” and an “activity focus”.
We’ll then have an extended time of silence and listening.
Finally, we’ll wrap up by summarising what we’ve been praying and reminding ourselves of the next focus. Our hope, of course, is that between meetings we’ll all be praying fervently as individuals, in households, and with friends.
Jesus taught us to pray “Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy! Your Kingdom come …” and we’ll be following this pattern. Each time we gather together, we’ll start by reminding ourselves that we come to God as children before a loving Father, and we’ll follow this with a time of praise.
Sometimes this time of praise will be musical, but most of the time it will simply be a time of praising God in prayer.
Each meeting, we’ll have a “community focus” and an “activity focus”. The community focus will be a particular group of people, and our aim here is to pray God’s blessing on them, and to ask for his wisdom in how to reach that group of people with the Good News of Jesus Christ.
We’ll have someone with a heart for this group of people leading us to get us all started, then we’ll have a time of open prayer.
Each meeting, we’ll have a “community focus” and an “activity focus”. The activity focus will be either an activity that we have done (pre-lockdown or during) or else something we are considering starting.
The idea here is to come with “open hands” – not presuming that things should continue how they are, but asking for God’s leading and wisdom.
We’ll have someone involved with this activity leading us to get us all started, then we’ll have a time of open prayer.
We’ll have an extended time of silence each time we meet – normally five to ten minutes. For some this will be how they find it easiest to pray; for all of us, this will be a chance to ask God to lead us and show us how he wants us to go forward.
We’ll ask people to share anything they feel might be God’s leading over the Zoom chat. If you take longer to reflect, or want to discuss it first, you can also email or phone Al or Chris Helsby in the days following the meeting.
